-        Motor de gasolina. Es el más tradicional y funciona a base de aire y combustible. Posee un sistema compuesto por válvulas de escape y cilindros. Éstos poseen a su vez dos válvulas, la de admisión A y la de escape E.  Su funcionamiento se divide en cuatro tiempos: aspiración, compresión, carrera de trabajo y  carrera de escape que permiten el funcionamiento de dicho motor.

 

-        Motor Diésel. Fue inventado por el ingeniero alemán Rudolf Diesel en 1892. Su encendido se logra gracias a una temperatura más elevada con motivo de la comprensión del aire en el interior de un cilindro. Funciona mediante una combinación sin chispa de aire y gas. El combustible se mezcla con el aire a alta temperatura y se quema rápidamente. Con la compresión la presión y la temperatura se disparan en un tiempo récord.

 

-        Motor eléctrico.  Se trata de un tipo de motor que transforma la energía eléctrica en mecánica. Son motores más reducidos que los habituales, tanto en tamaño como en peso y permiten su fabricación en diferentes formas.  Funcionan gracias a giros elevados y constantes y son de alto rendimiento. Se usan más en instalaciones industriales, respetan el medio ambiente tanto en cuanto a la emisión de CO2 y están en constante auge.

 

-        Motor de Carga Estratificada. Se caracteriza por poseer una cámara de combustión doble dentro de cada cilindro, siendo la antecámara la que tiene mayor mezcla de aire y combustible. Limita la emisión de hidrocarburos y monóxido de carbono.

 

-        Motores térmicos. Son aquellos motores que funcionan gracias a la energía procedente del calor. Pueden ser de combustión externa o interna. El motor de combustión externa produce una combustión en un fluido que no es el mismo que el del motor pudiendo alcanzar una temperatura mayor que el interno. Y el motor de combustión interna, transforma la energía química en térmica y esta, a su vez, en mecánica. Produce una combustión del fluido del motor y mezcla el aire con el gas, la gasolina, biocombustibles o con gasolina.

 

-        Motor de Gas Natural. Para su funcionamiento, se encarga de adoptar el compresor refrigerado por agua y el control electrónico de válvula de liberación del tubo de escape y así aumentar la velocidad de reacción.  Adopta la combustión bajo presión y es la principal alternativa al petróleo. La dificultad que presenta este tipo de motor es su almacenaje, ya que se trata de un producto altamente inflamable. Y, entre sus ventajas, si se decide usar el motor de gas natural en un vehículo de motor de gasolina no es necesario realizar una reforma de este, solo adquirir un convertidor catalítico opcional.

 

 

-        Motor de Dos Tiempos. Este tipo de motor permite la reducción en la duración de los periodos de absorción del combustible así como en la expulsión de gases a una parte mínima de uno de los tiempos, en lugar de que cada operación requiera un tiempo determinado. Ganó importancia durante la crisis del petróleo de los años 70 y 80. Tiene una mecánica sencilla, es de fabricación barata, no es preciso mucha refrigeración y proporciona  una destacada seguridad en la conducción.
